While this may sound like something you should try, we’re here to tell you that it is in fact, not the best idea, and better yet, we have some very compelling reasons that you should keep in mind when temptation strikes.
You don’t necessarily understand their business
If you are new to the market, it can be difficult to see a competitor’s products or services that are similar than yours, outperform your business. However, that does not mean that you should start to adapt their marketing practices.
We say this because there are often various reasons that another product is doing better than another, and when you try and copy those reasons, you’re doing your business a major disservice in terms of trustworthiness.
Rather put the effort into making your offering shine, and take the time to create a marketing approach that works for you.
Opinions happen
When you parrot a design or marketing approach, you run the risk of falling into the trap of opinion-based decision making.
It comes down to the fact that you won’t know why a competitor is making the changes they are making, which might be because of various reasons, all ranging from someone’s opinion in their business to advice tailored specifically for their unique business needs.
This means that on average, you’ll be better off in making your own decisions about your business’ marketing choices – ideally based on data.
You should focus on your USP, not hide it
The fact of the matter of your business is that you are doing what you’re doing because you’re filling a niche in the market. This also means that you will be doing this differently than your competitors will, which is why you should not waste time in copying them.
It comes down to identifying and focusing on your unique offering and building your marketing around those characteristics that set you apart from the rest. This isn’t something you can do if you copy another competitor.
